Fact or opinion?

Find out what can be checked and what someone just thinks.

Fact or opinion?

A fact can be checked. You can count it, measure it or find it in a book.

An opinion says what someone thinks. Or what they like.

‘Cubehaven has 20 levels.’ That’s a fact. You can count the levels.

‘Cubehaven is the best game.’ That’s an opinion. Leo prefers comics.

Words like best, awesome or boring almost always give away an opinion.

Everyone can have an opinion. It’s fine to think differently. But an opinion must not dress up as a fact.

Game: Find the opinion in disguise

Correct: 0 of 2

Read the message. Tap the sentences that are trying to trick you. But one message is fine.

If you can't see anything suspicious, tap “I see nothing suspicious”.

Round 1 of 2 · Found: 0

A message in Cubehaven from a player you don’t know

Scientists have found that Cubehaven is the best game in the world! Absolutely everyone plays it. Anyone who doesn’t play it is boring.

Game: Fact or opinion?

Correct: 0 of 6

Read the sentence. Decide if it is a fact or an opinion.

Statement 1 of 6

A dog is a mammal.

Talk together

  1. Tell me one fact and one opinion about our family.
  2. What’s your favourite game or book? Is that a fact or an opinion?
  3. When did we have different opinions? Was that a problem?

Tip for adults: Try this at dinner: one person says a sentence, the others guess whether it’s a fact or an opinion. Show your child that adults have different opinions too – and that this is fine.
