False scarcity

“Only 7 left” – pressure to buy before you compare the offer.

What is rare seems more valuable – and the fear of missing out beats comparing prices and reviews. Stock counters and countdown timers can be set to anything on a website; they prove nothing.

Example · made up for illustration
Online shop: “Today only €59 (−79%). Last 3 items, offer ends in 09:59!”

How to spot it

  • “Only 7 left”, “2 places remaining”, “limited capacity”.
  • A countdown that starts again when you reload the page.
  • Notices like “14 people are looking at this right now”.

How to check and what to do

  • Reload the page or come back later – see whether the stock count and the timer really change.
  • Compare the price with other sellers and look for reviews of the shop outside its own website.
  • Find out who runs the shop (company name, registration number and address) – be extra careful with an unknown shop that is rushing you.
  • Ask yourself whether you would buy it without the countdown.

Tip: A missed discount almost always comes back. Money paid to a fake shop rarely does.

The card fits on one A4 page – for the classroom, a noticeboard, or parents and grandparents.
