Threats

Scaring people with fines, court, a blocked account or stopped deliveries so they act out of fear.

Fear drowns out careful thinking: when you might lose money, end up in court or be cut off, you want to fix it now and stop asking who is actually writing. A real debt or problem can be documented, and you will be given time to check it.

Example · made up for illustration
Automated call: “Our records show an unpaid amount. If you don’t pay by tomorrow, we will take you to court. Press 1 to speak to an agent.”

How to spot it

  • Something serious is threatened: a blocked account, court, bailiffs, a fine or stopped deliveries.
  • You had never heard of the debt, fine or problem before.
  • The threat comes with a quick payment or a request for your details via a link or over the phone.
  • There are no specifics you could check: a contract, invoice or case number.

How to check and what to do

  • Don’t react while you’re upset. Hang up and don’t click the link.
  • Check for yourself: in your banking app, in your own contracts and bills, or with the company on a number you already know.
  • Talk to someone you trust before you pay anything.

Tip: The more a message scares you, the slower you should act.
