Pressure and emotion

False urgency

Pressure to act right now (“within 24 hours”, “today only”) so there is no time to check.

Hurry switches off attention: with the clock ticking, there is no time to ask, compare or call. That’s why scammers and pushy sellers almost always add a deadline.

Example · made up for illustration
Text from an unknown number: “Your parcel is awaiting a €1.99 delivery fee. Pay within 24 hours or it will be returned to the sender.”

How to spot it

  • A very short deadline: “within 24 hours”, “today only”, “by 5 pm”, “offer ends in 09:59”.
  • The message came out of the blue and immediately wants something – a payment, your details or a decision.
  • The hurry comes with more pressure: a threat, a bargain that will vanish, or a request not to call anyone.

How to check and what to do

  • Don’t act straight away. Give it a few minutes – where money is involved, a whole day.
  • Check another way: in the app or on the website you open yourself, or on a number you already know.
  • Ask yourself: what would really happen if I did this tomorrow? With an honest offer, usually nothing.
  • At work, stick to the usual approval process, even if it’s “urgent”.

Tip: An honest offer will still be there tomorrow. Anyone who won’t give you time to think has a reason.
